Recycling of noble/critical metals (ex: platinum group metals from spent catalysts) by supercritical CO2 extraction assisted by polymers


Abstract

The project aims at recycling noble/critical metals by polymer-assisted supercritical CO2 extraction, without using high T nor generating large amounts of toxic effluents to be treated, and leaving the matrix intact in case of recovery from spent supported catalysts.


Description of Projectidea

The project aims at recycling noble/critical metals (ex: platinum group metals) without using high T nor generating large amounts of toxic effluents to be treated, and leaving the matrix intact in case of recovery from spent supported catalysts (ex: alumina supports). Supercritical CO2 is able to treat even porous materials. Polymers will be designed as CO2-soluble extractants to extract the metals from the matrix (or from the solid or liquid wastes) to the supercritical CO2 media.

UMR 5253 ICGM, team IAM (Patrick Lacroix-Desmazes, project leader) : synthesis and characterization of CO2-soluble polymer extractants


Partners sought to complete the consortium

The project needs competencies in:
- resources and characteristics of spent catalysts (or resources and characteristics of metal-containing solid or liquid wastes/effluents)
- supercritical CO2 extraction technology
- organometallic chemistry (complexation of metals)
- analytical chemistry (quantitative analysis of metals) (ICP,...)
- electrochemistry (oxidation state of the metals; possible recovery of the metals from the extracted phase by electrodeposition)
- enterprise in noble/critical metals recycling
- any other partners interested in the project and bringing complementary competences
