The Analytical, Environmental and Geo- Chemistry (AMGC) department of VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) will work, for this H2020 project, together with municipalities of the Brussels Capital Region wanting to re-connect or build blue-green corridors in private and public space in the near future, and at the same time promoting cleaner surface- and ground-waters.
These municipalities already expressed their interest in this Horizon 2020 project. The 4 pre-selected urban sites, currently under study, are located in the South of Brussels where major problems of floods and water pollution regularly occur. The re-connection of water-ways has to be designed in relation with the combined sewer network and the urban infrastructure in the catchment. In parallel of flood mitigation and ecological objectives, social and recreational objectives are also be taken into account.
The Brussels group (VUB - AMGC + municipalities) can be a front-runner, even if a position of follower (less preferable) can be discussed according to the need of the consortium.
The VUB-AMGC team developed a method, “The Urban Hydrologic Landscapes”, to support and facilitate the adaptation of nature-based solutions (ex. blue-green networks, rain gardens and biofiltration cells) in the local environment of the Brussels Capital Region (Belgium). This methodology is transferable to other contexts to facilitate the exchange of experience between ‘front-runner’ and ‘follower’ cities.
The VUB-AMGC group may also assess the beneficial impacts of the nature-based solutions on the water quality and quantity, thanks to (geo)chemistry analyses and hydrological simulations regularly performed by AMGC researchers.
