The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a key player in research and innovation in Luxembourg, covering with its 630 employees the domains of materials, environment and IT. As an RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) and with its interdisciplinary impact-driven approach, LIST contributes to the development of Luxembourg’s economy and society. In the domain of environment, LIST develops strategies, technologies and tools to better monitor, assess, use and safeguard natural and renewable resources.
At LIST, the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department brings together with its teams made of 170 life, environmental, and IT scientists and engineers, the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle major environmental challenges our society is facing today. ERIN’s RDI activities embrace four thematic domains: i) Water security and safety, ii) Plants for biomass, biopolymers and bioenergy, iii) Life cycle sustainability and risk assessment, and iv) e-Science for environmental and biological applications.
At ERIN, the team of the RDI Unit on Life Cycle Sustainability and Risk Assessment (LiSRA), in particular, has an internationally recognized expertise in the field of environmental assessment of products and services, namely for the development and application in life cycle assessment (LCA), input-output analysis, carbon and ecological footprint, emergy evaluation, and eco-design. These competences have been developed over the last 5 years thanks to the close collaboration with European universities and research institutes, and many industrial partners from different economic sectors.
The ultimate goal of researchers at LiSRA is to develop the necessary integrated knowledge and skills on available and new tools and methods for environmental policy support and industrial decision-making, which can guide stakeholders to a better understanding of the complex relationships between the heavy technological supply-chains and the fragile natural systems. To this end, the LCA group at LiSRA is running in between fundamental and applied research activities to make the LCA method more robust, interdisciplinary and operational in combination with other approaches and modelling frameworks, such as risk assessment, geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, integrated ecosystem modelling, benefit–cost analysis, process optimization, equilibrium modelling, ecosystem service valuation, agent-based and ecological modelling, etc.
